Healthy Gut, Healthy You

Your gut is arguably one of the most important parts of your body. The gut, also known as the “Second Brain”, helps many other parts of your body function properly.

What is gut health?
This refers to how well our body is able to break down, digest and absorb nutrients. It’s also about your gut microbiome—home to trillions of bacteria and fungi that is connected to the state of your overall health. Our gut health impacts our digestion, mood, energy, weight, our body’s ability to fight infections, and even our skin.

What are common symptoms associated with an unhealthy gut?
Many factors can affect our gut health and microbiota. These factors can be associated with poorer gut health:
i. Diet- a diet high in processed foods, saturated fat and refined sugars.
ii. Exposure to Pathogens
iii. Psychological Stress
iv. Medications: Antibiotics, Proton pump inhibitors.
v. Regular tobacco and Alcohol consumption.
vi. Lack of physical activity/ exercise

Common symptoms of an unhealthy gut include: frequent digestive tract issues (e.g.bloatedness, discomfort, constipation, diarrhea), fluctuating weight, skin irritation or fatigue.

Maintaining Good Gut Health
5 Simple Things You Can Do Today For A Healthy Gut (And Why It’s Important to Start Now!)

1. Chew your food thoroughly and eat slowly
This helps in optimal digestion and absorption of available nutrients.

2. Stay hydrated
Adequate fluid intake is required for good digestion and healthy gut bacteria.

3. Reduce intake of highly processed foods
A high dietary intake of refined sugars, processed foods and alcohol is known to decrease beneficial gut bacteria and can lead to inflammation.

4. Stay Active
Regular exercise stimulates the gut and increases intestinal activity, which can help with digestive problems such as constipation and bloating. Aim for at least 30 minutes of active exercise daily (e.g. brisk walking, swimming, yoga, cycling, etc).

5. Monitoring of Health
Maintaining your gut health is important for optimal overall health. Do consult a doctor should you experience any symptoms of concern or to find out more about regular health screening.
